Fake Blood was a Montreal-based garage punk n roll band dedicated to interpreting the best of 1980s cinema as fast paced and furious action adventure themed rock songs. The band started as a two piece in November of 2001, consisting of Nathan on guitar and Hot Carl on drums. For lyrical inspiration, we drew from a collection of hundreds of BETA video cassettes from the 80s, the remaining stock of a bankrupt video store acquired by Carl at a flea market. In some instances, Nathan would compose lyrics by simply reading the description of the movie directly off the back of the box. We jammed loudly in the bedroom of Carl's ground floor apartment in Montreal's Latin Quarter, and eventually named the band Cinema Chocolat. The band played its first show in Ottawa on Canada Day, July 1st, 2002.
Eventually, we became unsatisfied with the limitations of having only one guitar player and recruited Stephen Ceresia to play the bass. After many beer and cigarette fueled practices at a pay-by-the-hour rehearsal studio called Music City on Beaubien St near Parc Ave, the three of us went on to rock out in dingy bars across the city. Cinema Chocolat recorded its first demo CD on a budget of almost nothing using a borrowed four-track tape recorder and pirated software on Nathan's computer.
When the humor behind the name Cinema Chocolat wore thin, we decided to change our name. A long deliberative process followed and we finally settled on Fake Blood. After playing several more shows under the new name, Steve left the band in late 2005, and Tyler Knight joined as the new bass player. He was on the strings when Fake Blood produced the Live at Cafe Campus recording, in addition to the band's only studio production, Who Will Survive. That album was also recorded live with no overdubs as part of Fake Blood's continuing effort only to produce honest recordings of how the band actually sounded.
Fake Blood had the pleasure to perform with many bands including Crackpot, The Dropouts, Priestess, The Adam Brown, Weapons of Mass Seduction, Nitrosonique, The Nymphets, The Glads, Femme Generation, Cosmos Quazar, A Vertical Mosaic, The Hooks, Holy Shroud, For the Mathematics, The Bloody Hollies, Barracuda Sunrise, Million Dollar Marxists, Jerk Appeal, Shifters, Mono Hum, Replikants, and others. The band's final show was at the Playhouse on December 10th, 2006 with our good buds The Adam Brown.
